By Caitlin Miles GRAFFITI IS on the rise in Linwood – reported incidents have nearly doubled in a month. Statistics from the city council show a jump in graffiti, from 55 in April to 102 in May. Incidents also increased in New Brighton – but not by as many. It went from 41 to 47 and Wainoni went up from 25 to 36. Linwood Park was also labelled as a graffiti hot spot with 11 incidents in May. Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member Alexandra Davids said Linwood Park has been an ‘ongoing issue’ in terms of graffiti and vandalism. The city council locked the toilets in the park earlier this year in an effort to reduce the vandalism and graffiti being done to them. Ms Davids said the city council and graffiti team monitor the area and try to keep the area clear the graffiti as soon as possible. Thomson Park in New Brighton and Hampshire St in Aranui also fall into the hot spot category, both had five graffiti incidents.

THERE’S A great appeal starting at your local Countdown supermarket next month. And if you look at our front page photo today you will understand why. The annual Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal starts early next month and every dollar that goes into it helps children like eightyear-old Jacob Matua. The tremendous smile Jacob had for the camera belies the perilous situation he – and many others like him – are in. Each year, Countdown supermarkets run an appeal to help provide equipment for patients using Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric and neo-natal services. And the good news is: Jacob is doing well. “He’s making great progress,” his aunt says. – Barry Clarke

Tree theft sparks warning THEFT OF trees from Charlesworth Reserve now has the city council warning people to keep an eye out for ‘suspicious activity’. A man was spotted by park users and police officers on community patrol removing cabbage trees from the reserve recently and was stopped before he could get away. It has prompted the city council to ask the public to be aware of people acting suspiciously around parks throughout the Tanya city. Jenkins City council park ranger Andrew Crossland said the thefts highlighted an ongoing problem for parks staff, with trees and plants regularly being stolen from reserves, parks and roadsides. “In the case of Charlesworth Reserve, we were incredibly lucky that members of the public took action when they saw the suspicious behaviour. We’re also very happy that a passing police patrol took action and cautioned the man involved. They also

In Brief RAM-RAID Police are investigating an early Saturday morning ram-raid on an electronics store in Blenheim Rd. Oobe, an Apple product provider, was hit by a vehicle at about 6am. An unknown number of goods were taken. It is the second ram-raid on Blenhiem Rd in the past two months. Staff arrived at Big Save Furniture at 7.30am on May 25 to find a stolen Subaru had been driven through two windows of their business. A $7200 lounge suite was stolen. MEGA FACILITY MEETING A special Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board meeting is to be held in August for the purpose of formulating the board’s recommendation to the city council regarding the location of the new south-west mega facility. A board recommendation will be presented for consideration to the city council on August 24. LIBRARY BEING ASSESSED The future of the Upper Riccarton War Memorial Library is currently being assessed with a full detailed engineering evaluation assessment due to be completed within a month. The building has already had a preliminary report which has indicated it is possibly an earthquake-prone building.

HABITAT: Trees at Charlesworth Reserve provide a habitat for native birds. made him replant the trees,’’ Mr Crossland said. He said it was disappointing for not only the rangers but also for ratepayers – who have funded the planting of the trees “These parks are for everyone to enjoy so for someone to come in and rip out established trees

and plants is just senseless and heartbreaking for us,” he said. Estuary Trust Restoration Team co-ordinator, Tanya Jenkins is extremely disappointed that someone has resorted to stealing from this public reserve, an important habitat for native wetland birds.

Mr Crossland said trees were in parks and reserves for environmental reasons and also for the enjoyment of the community. He urged walkers and other park users to be on the alert and report any suspicious behaviour.

Countdown to supermarket Countdown‘s upcoming appeal will help provide equipment for patients using Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric and neo-natal services. Sarla Donovan visited cancer sufferer, eightyear-old Jacob Matua, who benefits from the equipment JACOB MATUA has visited this place many times. He’s in the Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre in the Riverside building at Christchurch Hospital, where’s he’s hooked up to an infusion pump dispensing the medicine he needs. It’ll be 10pm before this day’s treatment is over. After the eight-year-old started getting “headaches and tummy pain, neck pain, arm pain,” at the end of last year, a cancer diagnosis followed, along with nearly three months in hospital, getting treatment. Now he comes in for shorter stays – four days this time – and is crossing his fingers that he

Bond lightens the mood: “I wish I could say that!” The nurses play cards with him, including memory and skip bo. Lucy Stephenson, who is supervising today, says he’s quite the card shark. “I win every time,” Jacob says with a grin. His aunt Ula Faamoe sits with him, too, giving his mum – who has four other children including twin three-year-old’s – a break. She says he’s well at the moment: “The best I’ve seen him since starting the chemotherapy. He’s making great progress.” Beside his bed, a tall pump stand holds all kinds of medicines and beeping equipment. The $5000 stand is one of four in the centre, purchased with money from the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in 2013. Mrs Bond said it holds five to six pumps and keeps the medicines stable, as well as allowing nurses to easily read information on screens attached to the pumps. “DHBs find equipment like this hard to fund, because we can ‘make do’ with inferior (devices). It isn’t essential, but it just makes everybody’s life easier,” she said.

appeal How to donate •To donate to the appeal, visit your local Countdown and donate at the checkout or purchase a Kids Hospital Appeal wristband or raffle ticket •Contributions can be made at any Countdown, including the Colombo St and Eastgate Shopping Centre stores •The appeal has raised more than $10.4 million since it began in 2007 •It fundraises for 11 children’s hospitals around New Zealand, including Christchurch Hospital •It runs from August 7 until October 29

Last year’s appeal raised $123,270 for Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric wards and neo-natal unit. Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal chairwoman Ruth Krippner says most kiwi kids will visit hospital at some stage in their childhood. She said Countdown is proud to play a part in helping provide these hospitals with the equipment needed to treat illness and injury. “Whether it’s a one off visit for a minor injury or a lengthy stay for a serious illness, most New Zealand children will have a brush with a children’s hospital ward at some point– just like this family,” Ms Krippner said. “Thanks to the generosity of

our customers and the fundraising efforts of the Countdown teams, we’re able to help provide hospitals with the much neededequipment to treat thousands of Kiwi kids. Last year, we raised more than $1.1 million, and we’re hoping to do the same this year.” Meanwhile, Jacob is busy putting on his “best face” for the photographer. “Does a picture come out of that?” he asks.

Hundreds of knitted poppies to mark century since WW1 KNITTED POPPIES have been on display throughout the Linwood Library – thanks to Vonnie Kondra who put her knitting needles to work to make 300 of them. The city libraries got involved with a Government-run programme called WW100 – which marks the centenary of World War 1. One of the library staff suggested getting the community to make poppies for a display. Ms Kondra got involved in the project after her friend sent her to the library to get knitting and crochet patterns for poppies. She decided to pick up her needles and help out with the project – but she didn’t just make one or two, she made 360. Although she started out with her own wool, it didn’t take long before the Woolston Community Centre donated $50 towards more wool, with others donating wool as well. Some members of her family were involved in WW1 in France, Palestine and ElAlamein, which made it a very

Funding boost for pool project

By Caitlin Miles A PROJECT to get Spreydon a pool has been given a funding boost. The Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board has given $18,000 to the project to have a community pool based at West Spreydon School. The pool has been a long time coming, a committee was launched in 2009 to repair the original. Repairs were finished in February 2011, shortly before the 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck which destroyed the committee’s hard work, damaging the pool beyond repair.

Zealand Community Trust and various local businesses. The pool has come in pieces from the US. The design is more likely to survive an earthquake – with minimal damage. The pieces move better as they can be taken apart and put back together. The money from the community board will go towards the building costs of the pool. The pool committee also plans to put in changing sheds, filters, landscaping and fencing. It is also looking at options around putting in a hoist system to make the pool more accessible which will be dependant on funding.

West Spreydon School pupils (left to right) James Quinn, Carsyn Welton, Leah Pratten and Amy Webber won the EPRO8 Challenge – a science competition for primary schools from the South Island. The science students, led by teacher Jude Lange, defeated 144 teams from across 120 primary schools. They won the competition by 50 points achieving a winning score of 350. Teams competing in the challenge had to create many items, including a moving bus over 1.2m, and a camera boom over 2m high. Other students were able to follow the team’s achievements during the day as principal Marriene Langton announced updates on the competition across the school’s loudspeaker system. The cheering could be heard all over the school grounds.

The new Swimsmart Membership is here! ANOTHER WIN: Lyle Matthysen warms up for the match against Papanui, which Cashmere High won 4-0 but also suffered several injuries.

Injury-stricken Cashmere aim to recoup over break By Andrew King CASHMERE HIGH will welcome the break in the Connetics first XI football competition after suffering a few injuries in their 4-0 win over Papanui last week. The competition stops over the school holidays and returns on July 26, but Cashmere will relish the opportunity to rest their players, especially with the boys Lotto premier

football tournament looming. It will be played in Napier from September 4-8. Centre attacking midfielders Eddie Wilkinson and Max Chrietien, along with right midfielder Declan Tyndall, all suffered injuries in the Papanui game with coach Craig Squires saying it will test the depth of the squad. “The plan is that they now have some time to

The new Swimsmart membership offers a new approach to learning to swim. Swimsmart members will get free, unlimited access to all Christchurch City Council pools outside of regular lesson times. This provides kids with extra opportunities to practise their swimming skills! Customers will now be able to enrol for a membership that offers up to 48 weeks of lessons per year. The new membership also allows customers to pay on a more regular basis via direct debit instead of paying for a full term up front.

Grading of children’s swimming skills occurs on a regular basis, so they can move up a level as soon as they’re ready. If there’s no space available at that level at a suitable time, your child will go on a waitlist and get some advanced instruction at their current level. Book now to secure your child’s spot! When the competition resumes, Cashmere will take on Middleton at 5.45pm at the Christchurch Football Centre, which is home to all league games played this year.

New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. Anyone who believes they have a fungal infection of the nails is invited to make an appointment for a consultation with Feet First so one of the qualified Podiatrists can assess if that is the case, and if so, will recommend the Clearanail procedure. This involves the initial treatment, and three follow-up appointments at monthly intervals to check progress. “Fungal nail infections won’t disappear immediately,” clinic director Charlotte Russell says, “so people need to commit to the process, which can take up to four months as the nail grows.” She says now is an ideal time to start fungal nail treatment with Clearanail, so nails will be looking healthy again when the warm, sandal-wearing weather arrives. Feet First has an introductory offer on Clearanail until the end of July. Call them on 348-7910 for details.

The Clearanail machine and related products.

In addition to offering this highly effective treatment, Feet First has another unique feature – the Shoe Room. Here, clients can browse through a wide selection of ‘fashionable, functional footwear’ for men and women that not only provides support and comfort, but also looks modern and attractive. The four registered and experienced Feet First Podiatrists offer the full range of podiatry services for all ages and all conditions, with customised treatment provided for every client. They also offer a range of quality foot treatment products, including the German brand Gehwol. The clinic at 37 Main South Road is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm, with late nights on Monday and Thursday to 7pm by appointment. The Shoe Room is open Monday to Friday
